NumBots equips each pupil with the set of core maths skills they require by building their knowledge from the ground up - starting at the very beginning with subitising.
Once pupils can recognise small quantities of objects (“counting-without-counting”), they are asked to subitise two groups, presented together. The deliberate use of previous arrangements helps introduce the idea of numbers being partitioned, laying the foundation for number bonds.
Familiar pictorial representations (including bar models and cherries) raise the difficulty of questions without affecting pupils’ confidence. Pupils begin to explore abstract number problems within 10, and practice automating their responses to “one/two more/less than...” questions.
This natural mathematical progression from one concept to the next ensures pupils are fully prepared to move on, from adding and subtracting within 10, to bridging 10, to finally answering questions involving two-digit numbers. Number lines and hundred squares are then used to explain more sophisticated addition and subtraction strategies, such as partitioning and compensation.
Instant recall of key number facts must be built on a secure and genuine mathematical understanding in order for pupils to move forward and solve increasingly complex problems.
Our Story Mode is designed to develop pupils’ understanding of the relationship between different numbers and concepts, such as partitioning and the part-whole model. NumBots’ deliberate teaching-for-mastery approach has led to carefully sequenced and varied levels that ensure pupils fully grasp each essential new skill. As a result of methodically layering up the complexity, pupils maintain maths confidence and are primed to learn the next concept.
As well as cementing their understanding, pupils’ recall is also significantly boosted. While Story Mode is underpinned by best practice in memory formation - i.e. short, spaced practice sessions on interleaved material - the quick-fire questions and low-stakes quizzing in Challenge Mode enhances pupils’ retrieval of number bonds and addition and subtraction facts and improves the efficiency of their mental strategies.
Pupils are exposed to a variety of representations and question styles for each concept, from pseudo-concrete, to pictorial, to abstract. This depth-before-breadth approach allows pupils to build up connections between key concepts and ideas, while the visual representations help to create mental models for more advanced questions.
Minimal changes are made to questions from one level to the next, slightly shifting what pupils are concentrating on and gradually increasing the level of demand. The sequenced, unlockable levels prevent pupils from moving ahead until they have fully understood the current concept and grasped the skills they need to confidently tackle the next challenge.
Within a level we keep the majority of each question the same, only varying a single element that we want pupils to focus on. By fixing certain common elements we reveal the underlying structure, helping pupils to recognise what is fundamental in order to select an efficient mental strategy.

If you already use Times Tables Rock Stars, you will be able to select which of your existing tutees should have access to NumBots.
When tutees first log in, using their username and PIN, they will meet Rusty and choose their own Bot character.
Tutees will play in ‘Story’ and ‘Challenge’ games, answering maths questions in order to discover hidden objects, unlock new features, collect rewards and earn coins to upgrade their character.
In the tutors’ dashboard you will find a detailed report on how each of your tutees are performing.
As well as tracking usage and effort over the previous week, the stats highlights levels the tutee is finding more difficult, which will help to guide where you should focus your interventions.

Absolutely! When you register for NumBots you will choose how many tutee accounts you would like to start with. (£2.40 per tutee, per year.)
Then, if you need to add more tutees part-way through your subscription, you can purchase additional tutee accounts at any time, which will be pro-rated to your subscription’s expiry date. Sign in to your tutor account, then go to Subscription > Purchase more accounts.
Once you’ve completed the registration process, you should be automatically logged into your NumBots account. If not, please go to play.numbots.com/#/account/tutor-login and log in using the email address and password that you provided when you subscribed.
Each tutee will sign in and play via their own individual account, so that we can log their progress and reward achievements.
To set up your tutees’ accounts, sign into your tutor account, then go to Manage Users > New User > Add Tutee. Enter their details, then click Save.
Once you’ve created their accounts, tell each tutee your organisation name, as well as their individual username and password. The tutees will then be able to sign in and play on the NumBots app, or by going to play.numbots.com.
Yes, when you create your tutees’ accounts, you will be able to select which of your existing tutees from Times Tables Rock Stars you would like to access NumBots.
Their details will then be copied across and they will be able to log in to NumBots using the same username and password they use for Times Tables Rock Stars.
Your subscription will expire automatically after 12 months, unless you choose to renew, so you don’t need to do anything.
